Some engagement rings begin with a diamond.
Millie's began with a family story.
When James proposed at sunset on Silver Sands Beach, he wasn't simply asking her to marry him. He was presenting a ring that connected two families, two generations, and the beginning of an entirely new chapter together.
How They Met
Although they had crossed paths before through Law School and Burnside Hockey Club, where James played alongside Millie's brother, they never truly got to know one another.
That changed in 2019.
After unexpectedly reconnecting, conversation came easily, and neither of them wanted it to end.
"We started talking — and we haven't stopped since."
The Proposal
After returning home from several years living in London, Millie and James spent the Australian summer doing what so many Adelaide families know and love — enjoying long afternoons between Port Willunga and Silver Sands.
One evening, after visiting friends, James suggested they stop by the beach for a swim before heading home.
As the sun began to set, the pair sat together watching the ocean.
James reached into his bag and pulled out a film camera — one Millie had given him while they were living in London.
He asked to take a photograph.
After a few unsuccessful attempts, Millie laughed and suggested the camera must have run out of film.
Instead, James opened the back of the camera.
Rather than film, a small pouch appeared.
Inside was an engagement ring.
Moments later, James was down on one knee.
"It was one of the most perfect and happiest moments of my life."

The Ring
Long before the proposal, Millie knew there was one thing she hoped would become part of her engagement ring — a treasured family heirloom diamond.
As she prepared to begin a new chapter of life, she wanted to carry a meaningful connection with her family into the future.
James secretly worked with James Thredgold to design a timeless natural diamond trilogy engagement ring, centred around her heirloom diamond.
To complete the design, James Thredgold carefully sourced two perfectly matched natural diamonds to sit alongside the family stone, creating a ring that honoured its history while giving it an entirely new life.

A Secret Journey
Creating the ring required one particularly memorable secret.
At the time, Millie and James had recently returned from London and were living together in Sydney.
One morning they commuted into the city together before heading to their respective offices.
Or so Millie thought.
Instead of going to work, James boarded another train to Sydney Airport, flew to Adelaide, personally delivered the heirloom diamond to James Thredgold, discussed the design with the team, then flew back to Sydney and arrived home in time for dinner.
Millie had absolutely no idea.
Looking back, it's one of her favourite parts of the entire story.
For James, choosing James Thredgold was equally meaningful. Not only was the jeweller located in the Adelaide where they both grew up, but it also reflected James' own family connection, making the finished ring deeply personal for both of them.
The Wedding
Millie and James were married at St Ignatius Church, Norwood, before celebrating with family and friends at Bird in Hand.
Their vision was simple — elegant, romantic and timeless.
Bird in Hand provided a beautiful private setting surrounded by gardens, while florist Louise Woodhouse transformed both the church and reception into unforgettable spaces.
Outside the church, towering greenery woven with Star Jasmine created a breathtaking entrance inspired by the floral installations seen at Pippa Middleton's wedding.
Inside Bird in Hand, long tables lined with white roses in bud vases and candlelight created an intimate atmosphere that perfectly reflected the couple's style.

Jewellery That Continues the Story
Millie wore both her James Thredgold trilogy engagement ring and wedding band on the day.
Today, they're joined by another special piece — a pair of natural diamond earrings James recently gifted her for her 30th birthday.
"Clearly I'm a fan!"
More Than Beautiful
While the ring immediately captures attention, it's the craftsmanship that Millie continues to admire every day.
She loves the intricate setting and the way it showcases each diamond while allowing the trilogy design to remain balanced and timeless.
Just as memorable was the experience itself.
"The staff are so helpful and friendly, and the jewellers are so talented."
What the Ring Means
"My engagement ring and wedding ring are my most precious and special belongings.
Every time I look at them, I think about all the hard work and thought that went into creating them.
I also think about how lucky I am to have a husband who put so much time, energy and travel into making sure I had the most beautiful engagement ring, and for choosing James Thredgold to make it all happen."
Advice for Other Couples
Millie's advice is simple.
"Go timeless over trends, and choose a ring that is true to your own style."
