Jewellery Design Trends Throughout The Decades

Arrow Thin Left Icon Arrow Thin Right Icon

Just like fashion and home decor, jewellery design trends have shifted dramatically over the past 100 years. While some trends have come back around, others stay firmly in the year they were popularised.

From the gemstone engagement rings of the 1920s to the sleek, modern designs of the 2000s, we will travel through time to discover the iconic jewellery styles of the different decades.

1800s

Most jewellery produced between 1837 and 1901 is referred to as ‘Victorian’, in reference to Queen Victoria’s reign. Popular jewellery at the time was characterised by intricate designs and sentimental symbols. Not many people could afford precious metals, but many people still wore mourning jewellery made from onyx and jet. Cameos and brooches were also widely worn.

1910s & 1920s

The 1920s welcomed the rise of Art Deco designs and gemstone jewellery. Gemstone engagement rings, long pendant necklaces and filigree rings were all the rage. Designs became more geometric and less intricate thanks to the influence of machinery and advancements in technology. The desire for order was strong.

1930s & 1940s

Against the backdrop of World War II, yellow gold was undeniably the most popular precious metal. This is also the period in which diamonds rose to fame, as effective marketing campaigns by De Beers painted diamonds as a symbol of romantic love. Diamond engagement rings became commonplace.

1950s & 1960s

Many of the jewellery trends of the 50s and 60s were influenced by celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. Elegant and simple pieces were preferred over anything too complicated, but designers still experimented with different patterns and bold colours.

1970s & 1980s

Chunky oversized bangles, statement earrings and oversized hoops are some of the hallmarks of the 1970s and 80s. This is when people became more experimental with fashion and accessories. Some of the styles that were popular at the time were boho, punk and glam rock.

1990s & 2000s

The beginning of the 1990s was very blingy. The more diamonds, the better! People wanted to be flashy and show off their wealth. Interestingly, the wealthier communities actually saw a massive shift toward minimalism and more simplistic pieces.
